Vogen Campaign
Well, I thought that this was the last week of the campaign but arrived at the shop to find there was still another week to go. I was struggling to keep my enthusiasm up as I was too far behind the leaders to challenge them, and I am building up my Imperial Guard army so I was hoping to get them into action soon. Never mind, I made my target to remain unbeaten throughout the campaign.

Kyle challenged me to another game against his Black Templars (you can read the previous report here) so I agreed as long as we didn't play on the Lord of the Rings table again. We got the Cityfight table instead. Aaarrrrgghhhh!

The more observant among you will notice a small tweak to my army list. Since I have padded out Severus' retinue with combat servitors I have tended to kill everything before he got a chance to use his Holocaust power. So for the end of the campaign I have dropped the power in favour of a psychic hood. I hope I won't regret it.

Terrain and Deployment
I won the roll off and picked the one relatively clear table quarter, which has a small trench system in it. I knew the Templars would be advancing and I wanted clear lines of sight for my shooting phases.

Inquisitor Kurven deployed in the trench system with Squad Seralvo and Squad Godirtho screening them. Squad Devaux were my push back unit in the centre, behind cover with Squad Vargas behind them ready to counter flame any attackers. My two rhinos stayed central and to my rear, to keep Kyle guessing.

The Templars bunched most of their army up in the relatively clear ground between two buildings, with only the lascannon squad set up high in cover. They chose the vow which would give them a 6+ invulnerable save throughout the game.

The Game
I won first turn and took it, hoping to get some licks in before the Templars were all over me. Unfortunately most of my units were either out of range or rolled poorly, so I only killed a couple of models. I swung my rhinos out to my left to stretch the Templars lines a bit and keep them on their toes. In fact, my plan was to bring them back to my right the next turn and reinforce that flank. But it was not to be.

I had failed to silence the lascannon and it popped Severus' rhino, then a single Heavy Bolter glanced Matoso's rhino twice and immobilised it. The Templars Assault Squad charged Squad Seralvo and wiped them out. They swept toward Squad Godirtho but fell short.

I ran Squad Matoso and Inquisitor Severus out of their wrecked rhinos and hung them behind Squad Devaux and Vargas, ready to counter charge as necessary. Everybody else shot at the assault marines and despite Squad Godirtho losing both plasma guns to overheats, I killed the squad. More ones were to follow as the Daemonhost got lost in the warp. A double one on a deep strike. Unbelievable!

The Templars continued to advance and killed Squad Devaux in the shooting phase, leaving them with no-one to assault. Nevertheless they were now very close to my lines.

I sent my Stormtroopers over the top and Squads Vargas and Matoso rushed straight at the Templars in the centre, while the survivors of Squad Godirtho ran up the right flank to contest the table quarter.

The meltaguns of Matoso, along with the plasma of Kurven completely wiped out the Terminators, while Vargas' flamers toasted several of the large tactical squad. My Eversor assassin, who had been lurking around the centre, charged out at the now exposed Emperor's Champion and the two killed each other over a couple of rounds of combat.

The tactical squad in the centre assaulted Squad Vargas and got stuck in combat just long enough for me to get Severus' squad stuck in. I won the fight handily and stood back to weigh up the battle before I decided to sweep or consolidate.

Kyle had two units in his starting quarter, the small lascannon and heavy bolter squads, and he controlled the adjoining quarter to my right with his Chaplain and retinue. I was running Squad Godirtho toward the Chaplain's quarter but the were a distance away and just one more casualty would take them below half strength. Kurven held my starting quarter and no-one had troops in the quarter to my left.

I swept Severus toward Kyle's starting quarter and successfully contested it. Squad Matoso consolidated left to take the empty quarter and Squad Godirtho raced forward. Now I just had to endure the Templars last shooting phase.

Fortunately the Templars were unable to reduce Severus' squad to below half and they didn't even kill a single Stormtrooper elsewhere.

Totting up the quarters we found that Kyle held one (with his Chaplain) and contested another (against Inquisitor Severus) while I held one with Kurven, one with Squad Matoso and contested one.

Result: A narrow win for the Daemonhunters.

Campaign effect: None

Campaign results: Played 6, Won 6, Lost 0

Learning points
  • A second game against Kyle and a second Daemonhost lost in the warp. What are the odds of that happening? And then my next dice were for the plasma guns for which I rolled two ones and failed both their armour saves!
  • My screening tactic with the Stormtroopers worked yet again. A seventy point unit gets slaughtered in combat in order to wipe out a one hundred and fifty point unit. I like that equation.
  • Kyle plays this game like no-one else I've ever seen. In our two games he has hidden very powerful and expensive units just to ensure he gets the table quarters. This should be suicidal but he has actually won some games doing it (and we have had close games too). I guess it's a lesson to remember the mission objectives at all costs.

Vogen Campaign
This was my second game for the Vogen campaign and we only had an hour before the store was to close so we had to play very quickly. It was played on the same Lord of the Rings table which I used in game 1, and is covered in dense terrain.

This was the most bizarre game I have played in a long while.

Deployment
Kyle won the dice off and gave me the open corner with the cornfield in it - if I'd have won the roll I would have picked this one anyway! Since I was playing an assaulty Marine army again I used the same tactics, putting the Stormtroopers out front and everything else behind for a counter punch. The only difference was Severus, whose Rhino I put front and forward to my right. Since the Templars used their Pure in Body, Mind and Soul power to gain extra movement I tried to lure them right out in front of my guns.

The Game
I was completely unprepared for the speed at which the Templars hit me. I lost first turn and both rhinos went down immediately (to two meltagun shots, fired from Tactical squads on foot and they were both closer than 6") and Severus' squad were charged by the Terminators. All this before I had even moved a model!

My Eversor charged the large Tactical squad in the centre while the now dismounted Squad Matoso took two meltagun shots at the Emperor's Champion but failed to kill him. They then joined the assassin in the assault. Severus' squad easily dealt with the Terminators for minimal losses and they consolidated ready to receive the charge of the assault marines lurking behind the buildings.

A firefight erupted between Kyle's Tactical squad with the Heavy Bolter and my firebase. By the end of the game I had lost Squads Godirtho and Seralvo but had wiped out all of the Marines. The Emperor's Champion was chopped down by the Eversor in the centre, but the Templars were bolstered by the arrival of the Chaplain and his retinue.

The assault squad hung back and played no further part in the game as they just claimed their table quarter by hiding in some woods.

Severus joined the brawl in the centre and mayhem ensued. The Eversor went down to the Chaplain and the rest of Squad Matoso were wiped out, but then Severus and his squad killed most of the retinue and the rest of the Tactical squad. Severus went on to duke it out with the Chaplain and was eventually dragged down, but the Chaplain had been wounded and he had only two followers left. As they emerged from combat they were blasted apart by Inquisitor Kurven.

My Daemonhost finally appeared on turn 4 but was promptly lost in the warp (double 1 on a deep strike). The scramble for table quarters came down to Squad Vargas crawling through some woods under fire from the last Tactical squad with a lascannon. Fortunately they were unharmed and they helped me to tie the game at two table quarters apiece.

The campaign co-ordinator had neglected to write any rules for games that ended in a draw so he called it a win for both sides.

Result: Win

Campaign effect
I gained 50 extra points to add to my army for all of the coming games.

Campaign results: Played 2, Won 2, Lost 0
Learning points
  • I don't think my write up conveys just how strange this game was. It was played at a hundred miles an hour so it was littered with mistakes, coupled with bizarre dice rolls and very dramatic moments. We forgot we were playing a nightfight on turn two so we switched to a cleanse mission, I was assaulted before I had even had a turn, the Daemonhost got lost in the warp, assault marines hid in the undergrowth for 5 turns and there was a massive ruck in the centre of the board including an Emperors Champion, a Chaplain, an Inquisitor Lord and an Eversor assassin as well as over 30 troopers. Our game even caused Paul, the campaign organiser, a headache as he hadn't planned for draws. After some deliberation he decided to class the game as a win for both sides.
  • A thought flashed across my mind as I rolled for the Daemonhost deep striking - gee I've never, ever rolled a double one for deep striking. Sure enough I got snake eyes!
  • Having lots of ultra cheap Stormtrooper squads is working out well. They are charge bait and they can claim table quarters. Maybe I should add another squad or two.

DAEMONHUNTERS versus Black Templars Space Marines

Game: Warhammer 40,000 3rd edition
Opponent: ?
Mission: Take and hold
1st turn: Black Templars Space Marines
Points: 1000

Daemonhunters

  • Inquisitor Lord Severus, Daemonhammer, Bolt pistol, Holocaust, Icon of the Just, 2x Acolytes, Power Armour, Bolt Pistols and Close Combat Weapons, Combat Servitor, 2x Mystics, Rhino with Smoke Launcher
  • 3 x Death Cult Assassin
  • Daemonhost
  • Squad Matoso, 9 Stormtroopers, 2x Flamers, Veteran Sergeant with Bolt Pistol, Close Combat Weapon and Krak Grenades, Rhino, Smoke launchers and Extra Armour
  • Squad Seralvo, 7 Stormtroopers, 2x Grenade Launchers
  • Squad Vargas, 7 Stormtroopers, 2x Plasma Guns, Veteran Sergeant with Plasma pistol, Auspex and Krak Grenades
  • Squad Godirtho, 6 Stormtroopers, 2x Meltaguns
Black Templars Space Marines
  • Emperor's champion
  • Chaplain with retinue
  • 5 Terminators
  • 2 large marine squads
Deployment
I held the central ruined building which was the objective and I set up my three storm trooper squads on foot in or near the building. My opponent set up his largest marine squad, the Emperor's champion and his terminators in his centre to advance upon the ruined building, his chaplain and retinue took the right and his other tactical squad stood to my left (it had a lascannon).

The game
He did well early on and destroyed two storm trooper squads leaving the objective empty. My last storm trooper squad, Vargas, was stuck in a fire fight with his lascannon armed tactical squad.

The cavalry arrived in the shape of the Daemonhost who teleported in near the chaplain and killed the whole squad over a few turns of close combat. He also managed to force a pinning test on the terminators and they failed, keeping them out of the building for a turn. Squad Matoso barrelled up in their rhino parking it right in the centre of the building and thinned out the large tactical squad with their flamers. The assassins began to work their way forward.

Squad Matoso were then charged by the tactical squad and the Emperor's champion and a massive ruck developed on the objective. The terminators charged in and destroyed the rhino, the assassins leapt forward and took out the terminators, then Severus arrived and ended up in combat with the Emperor's champion. On the last turn of the game Severus finally slew the champion but the lascannon armed tactical squad had gotten a couple of models into the building so we called it a draw.

Result: Draw

Learning points
  • Things went pear shaped early on when I failed my morale checks and both squads deserted their posts, unable to rally, but I hung on in there and got my licks in.
  • What an epic fight between Severus and the Emperor's champion! They duked it out for 5 assault phases and Severus only just emerged victorious.
  • The Daemonhost was awesome as he rolled excellent powers; he got warp strength which allowed him to instant kill the chaplain, then he rolled speed to double his attacks when fighting the retinue.
